Dr. Mahmoud El Meteini is Ain Shams University’s current president, whereby he previously was the dean of the university’s medical faculty. Being one of the most prestigious medical schools in the region, Dr. Mahmoud obtained his masters and doctorate degrees in general surgery from Ain Shams University as well in 1989 and 1993 respectively, with his Doctorate thesis focused on experimental and clinical aspects of liver transplantation. That said, Dr. Mahmoud is considered to be Egypt’s leading Hepatologist and a pioneer in liver transplantations. In 2001, he initiated & directed the first living liver transplant program, both in adults & pediatrics, in Wady El-Nile hospital in Cairo. Additionally, in 2008, he founded the Ain-Shams Center for Organ Transplant (ASCOT) in Ain-Shams University. Dr. Mahmoud played key roles in regulating Organ transplantations in Egypt, which resulted in the government legislating an “Organ Transplant Law” in 2010. Dr. Mahmoud was the head of the committee that issued the required parameters, prerequisites and infrastructure for licensing hospitals & healthcare institutions as organ transplant centers in Egypt. Consequently, he is currently a member of the “Supreme Committee for Organ Transplant” and chairs the “Ethical Committee” within the Supreme Committee. Within medical associations, Dr. Mahmoud is a member of numerous national and international professional organizations which include and are not limited to the Egyptian surgical society, head of the scientific committee of the Egyptian society of liver cancer (ESLC), and a founding member and secretary general of the Pan-Arab Liver Transplant Society (PALTS). By means of further advancing the private sector’s capabilities and expertise, Dr. Mahmoud previously held board positions within several healthcare and local pharmaceutical institutions in Egypt such as Egyptair Company for health care services (2007- 2013), Sedico pharmaceuticals (2009- 2012), and medical council for Epico pharmaceuticals (2010- 2015). Currently, Dr. Mahmoud is a board member at Ain-Shams University specialized hospital, Wady El-Nile Hospital Medical Council, and Wady El-Nile Benta pharmaceuticals, in addition to Cleopatra Hospitals Group.
